There are many different reasons why you might want to rent a self-storage unit. I’ve narrowed it down to this list of 6 reasons why people are renting self-storage units today.
College moving
While in college, people tend to change homes frequently, whether it’s from home to the dorms, dorms to an apartment, an apartment to a house, or any other combination of move. One of the challenges of living and moving into dorms is that they aren’t permanent. You will probably be moving out at the end of the spring semester and have nowhere to store your stuff for the summer. Especially for students that come from out of state and are going home for breaks, renting a storage unit helps relieve the stress of finding a place to put all the things you accumulated over the year, and can keep your valuable belongings safe and secure while you’re gone. There are other options like Collegeboxes created specifically to help students store and ship their things.
Business storage
Having a storage unit for your business or organization can help de-clutter your office and keep everything in a safe location. Do you have extra furniture or files that you can’t throw away but take up a lot of space around the office? Putting your company or organization’s items into a storage unit keeps it safe and easily accessible when you need it.
If you are part of a club or organization, it might be beneficial to have a small storage space set up for any paperwork, tools or other things your group might need in the future.
Seasonal storage
Do you like to make sure your home looks good for each season and holiday? You might have different sets of decorations for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, the 4th of July, etc. and not have enough space to keep your growing collection of seasonal items. Self-storage is the perfect opportunity to open up space around the house for other things. When Christmas is coming up, you can pack up all of your fall decorations, take them to your storage unit, pick up your decorations for the upcoming season and repeat throughout the year.
Sports equipment, tools and clothes can be seasonal as well. Put your skis away after winter, your lawnmower after fall, or your tank tops after summer. You’ll finally have your garage/shed/basement organized and free of clutter so you can make the most of your living space throughout the year.
Parking
There is room for your RV/Boat/Car or any other type of vehicle at a self-storage location near you. Your neighborhood might have parking ordinances or restrictions, or you might just have too many vehicles and not enough space for them. There are large indoor vehicle parking spaces available as well as many outdoor and covered vehicle parking spaces for your convenience.
Moving
If you’re retiring and moving into a smaller home, you’re probably going to have a lot of extra stuff that won’t fit into the new place, some of which may still be valuable to you that you don’t want to throw away or sell. Having a storage unit can help you organize what you want to keep while knowing that it will be safe the next time you go to your storage unit.
If you’re moving into a larger home, you may need space for furniture or other things you’ll be buying for your new home. Planning out your space and making your purchases beforehand can make your move much easier. You can get everything moved in at one time instead of taking multiple trips.
Renovations
Are you going to be working on your home in the near future? If you’re trying to remodel part of your house, you’re going to have to move everything out of that area and put it somewhere else. You don’t want dirt, dust, paint or anything else getting all over your furniture during the renovations. If you don’t have a lot of space around the house to begin with, this might make it hard to find a place to keep all of that furniture in some other location.
